Analysis of chlorophyll fluorescence reveals stage specific patterns of chloroplast-containing cells during Arabidopsis embryogenesis Biol. Res.
TEJOS,RICARDO I; MERCADO,ANA V; MEISEL,LEE A.
The basic body plan of a plant is established early in embryogenesis when cells differentiate, giving rise to the apical and basal regions of the embryo. Using chlorophyll fluorescence as a marker for chloroplasts, we have detected specific patterns of chloroplast-containing cells at specific stages of embryogenesis. Non-randomly distributed chloroplast-containing cells are seen as early as the globular stage of embryogenesis in Arabidopsis. In the heart stage of embryogenesis, chloroplast containing cells are detected in epidermal cells as well as a central region of the heart stage embryo, forming a triangular septum of chloroplast-containing cells that divides the embryo into three equal sectors. Torpedo stage embryos have chloroplast-containing...

AtchitIV gene expression is stimulated under abiotic stresses and is spatially and temporally regulated during embryo development Genet. Mol. Biol.
Gerhardt,Liliane B. de A.; Magioli,Cláudia; Perez,Ana B.U.C.M.; Margis,Rogério; Sachetto-Martins,Gilberto; Margis-Pinheiro,Márcia.
The expression of AtchitIV gene was analysed in Arabidopsis plants submitted to abiotic stresses. Transcript accumulation was detected in leaves in response to UV light exposure, exogenous salicylic acid administration and wounding. Transgenic Arabidopsis plants carrying AtchitIV promoter::gus fusion also showed differential expression of the reporter gene in response to these treatments. The AtchitIV expression was also analysed during Arabidopsis embryo development. GUS assay demonstrated AtchitIV promoter activation in zygotic embryos from torpedo stage up to full maturation. Promoter deletion analysis indicated that all the 5' cis-acting elements responsible for the specific tissue expression are located in a region of 1083 bp, adjacent to the start of...

Changes in polyamines content associated with zygotic embryogenesis in the Brazilian pine, Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze. Rev. Bras. Bot.
Astarita,Landro V.; Handro,Walter; Floh,Eny I.S..
Changes in the polyamine content were analyzed in different embryo developmental stages and tissues during seed development in the conifer Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze. Free polyamine contents varied according to the tissue and stage of embryo development, the highest levels occurring in the embryonic axis at the early stages, when putrescine and spermidine were most abundant. The levels of spermidine were higher from the stage where cotyledons arise, whereas putrescine decreases. The putrescine/spermine+spermidine ratio was higher during the initial phases of seed development, corresponding to cell multiplication and elongation, with a decrease in the final stages, corresponding to stabilization of the dry matter content.

Early ontogenesis of the angelfish, Pterophyllum scalare Schultze, 1823 (Cichlidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Korzelecka-Orkisz,Agata; Szalast,Zuzanna; Pawlos,Dorota; Smaruj,Izabella; Tañski,Adam; Szulc,Joanna; Formicki,Krzysztof.
This study describes the egg membrane structures of angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare), morpho-physiological changes during angelfish embryogenesis from activation to hatching under optimal conditions (28°C; pH 6.8), the developing larvae and fry, the effect of alkaline pH on the early developmental stages of the species, the relationship between food item size and fry survival. Egg membranes (thin, transparent, 1.67-2.18 µm thick) are covered by a sticky substance. The amber-coloured angelfish eggs were oval in shape, with average diameters of 1.436 and 1.171 mm, i.e., a mean volume of 1.033 ± 0.095 mm³. The survival rate of embryos and larvae kept in water with an elevated, slightly alkaline pH was very low: as few as 2% of the embryos survived, while in...

Embryology of Ageratum conyzoides L. and A. fastigiatum R.M. King & H. Rob. (Asteraceae) Acta Botanica
Franca,Rafael de Oliveira; De-Paula,Orlando Cavalari; Carmo-Oliveira,Renata; Marzinek,Juliana.
Ageratum has a complex circumscription, and recent studies have indicated its polyphyletism. The genus has been placed in the tribe Eupatorieae whose embryology is not fully known. Embryological data are conservative and important indicators of phylogenetic relationships and can improve family relationships. This study presents, for the first time in Eupatorieae, embryological data for Ageratum conyzoides and A. fastigiatum. Both species have common features of the family such as a unitegmic anatropous ovule, basal placentation, secretory tapetum, Polygonum megagametophyte, and Asterad embryogenesis. The data obtained reinforce the heterogeneity of the family embryology and show, for the first time, the anther wall development of the monocotyledonous type...

Embryonic and larval development of the topmouth gudgeon, Pseudorasbora parva (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Zhu,Dongmei; Yang,Kun; Sun,Ning; Wang,Weimin; Zhou,Xiaoyun.
ABSTRACT The topmouth gudgeon, Pseudorasbora parva (Temminck & Schlegel, 1842), is a small cyprinid fish that inhabits the littoral zones of freshwater habitats throughout Asia and Europe. It is regarded as an invasive species in Europe, but in its native range, in China, as food and as an environmental bio-indicator. In this study, the embryonic and larval development of P. parva was investigated for the first time. The eggs of P. parva are transparent, adhesive and elliptical. The mean size of fertilized eggs was (1.63×1.31) ± 0.04 mm. From fertilization to hatching, embryonic development could be divided into eight stages and 34 phases, and the incubation period lasted for 109.25 hours at 24 ± 1 °C. Newly hatched larvae were 4.1 ± 3 mm in length,...

Fecundity, embryo size and embryo loss in the estuarine shrimp Salmoneus carvachoi Anker, 2007 (Crustacea: Alpheidae) from a tidal mudflat in northeastern Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Oliveira,Mário Vitor; Costa-Souza,Ana Carla; Mariano,Rodolfo; Almeida,Alexandre Oliveira.
Abstract Studies on fecundity and embryo size have been frequently used to infer about the reproductive potential, embryogenesis, and the energy investment in embryo production in crustaceans. These parameters are relevant to the knowledge of life-history and diversity of reproductive strategies developed by this group. This study addressed the embryo production by the estuarine shrimp Salmoneus carvachoiAnker, 2007, a poorly known caridean shrimp. We investigated whether there was (1) a correlation between fecundity and carapace length, (2) an increase in embryo volume along the embryonic development, and (3) loss of embryos along development. In addition, we investigated whether the esternite length and height and width of the pleura of the second...

Galectins: a key intersection between glycobiology and immunology BJMBR
Rabinovich,G.A.; Riera,C.M.; Landa,C.A.; Sotomayor,C.E..
Galectins are a family of evolutionarily conserved animal lectins, widely distributed from lower invertebrates to mammals. They share sequence and structure similarities in the carbohydrate recognition domain and specificity for polylactosamine-enriched glycoconjugates. In the last few years significant experimental data have been accumulated concerning their participation in different biological processes requiring carbohydrate recognition such as cell adhesion, cell growth regulation, inflammation, immunomodulation, apoptosis and metastasis. In the present review we will discuss some exciting questions and advances in galectin research, highlighting the significance of these proteins in immunological processes and their implications in biomedical...

Oogenesis and egg development in triatomines: a biochemical approach Anais da ABC (AABC)
Atella,Georgia C.; Gondim,Katia C.; Machado,Ednildo A.; Medeiros,Marcelo N.; Silva-Neto,Mário A.C.; Masuda,Hatisaburo.
In triatomines, as well as in other insects, accumulation of yolk is a process in which an extra-ovarian tissue, the fat body, produces yolk proteins that are packed in the egg. The main protein, synthesized by the fat body, which is accumulated inside the oocyte, is vitellogenin. This process is also known as vitellogenesis. There are growing evidences in triatomines that besides fat body the ovary also produces yolk proteins. The way these yolk proteins enter the oocyte will be discussed. Yolk is a complex material composed of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and other minor components which are packed inside the oocyte in an organized manner. Fertilization triggers embryogenesis, a process where an embryo will develop. During embryogenesis the yolk will...

REPRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF Dromiciops gliroides (MARSUPIALIA: MICROBIOTHERIIDAE) IN TEMPERATE RAINFORESTS OF SOUTHERN CHILE Gayana
Muñoz-Pedreros,Andrés; Lang,Brian K; Bretos,Marta; Meserve,Peter L.
The reproductive biology of Dromiciops gliroides is described from five females collected during spring (October, December 1984) in southern continental Chile. Developmental morphology of intra-uterine embryos (October litters) was examined by microscopic analysis and compared with morphological attributes of 8 pouched young (December litters). Intra-uterine embryos demonstrate ontogenetic features characteristic of altricial neonates, which migrate from the urogenital opening to the marsupium in order to complete the later stages of development. D. gliroides apparently is a monoestrus, seasonal breeder producing one litter per year. Maximum recorded litter size is four, with birth occurring in early spring (October). The life cycle of D. gliroides is...

Thermal Manipulation Mid-term Broiler Chicken Embryogenesis: Effect on Muscle Growth Factors and Muscle Marker Genes Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Al-Zghoul,MB; Al-Natour,MQ; Dalab,AS; Alturki,OI; Althnaian,T; Al-ramadan,SY; Hannon,KM; El-Bahr,SM.
ABSTRACT Thermal manipulation (TM) during broiler chicken embryogenesis has been shown to promote muscle development and growth. However, the molecular bases of promoting broiler muscle development and growth are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular bases of muscle growth and development in broiler chickens subjected to TM. This included the investigating of the changes in mRNA expression levels of muscle marker genes, namely MyoD, myogenin, paired box transcription factor (Pax7) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), and muscle growth factors namely insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), myostatin and growth hormone (GH) during embryogenesis and on posthatch days 10 and 28. Fertile Cobb eggs (n=1500) were...

Variation of heavy metal concentrations (Ag, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Pb, V, and Zn) during the life cycle of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis ArchiMer
Miramand, Pierre; Bustamante, Paco; Bentley, Daniel; Koueta, Noussithe.
The developmental changes in the concentration of 8 essential and non-essential heavy metals (Ag, Cd, Cu, Co, Fe, Pb, V, Zn) in the tissues (digestive gland, cuttlebone and whole animal) of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis collected in the bay of the river Seine were monitored from the end of the embryogenesis until the adult reproductive stage. Compared to embryos, juveniles after hatching displayed much higher concentrations of Ag, Cu, Fe and Zn, suggesting an efficient incorporation from seawater. Conversely, the amounts of Cd, Pb and V in hatchlings remained constant suggesting that these metals are barely bioavailable for juveniles. Once the juveniles start to feed, the digestive gland appears to play a major role in the storage of all metals....
